frequently asked questions

How long and how many times a week is a typical session?

Sessions are usually 45 minutes. Most clients are seen once a week in the beginning, then, less frequently. The number of sessions depends on your needs.

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of time a client is in therapy depends on the nature of the problem and the goals of counseling. Some clients have a very specific problem which can be worked through in only one or two sessions.  Most clients prefer a short-term, solution-focused approach requiring the fewest number of sessions possible.  For others, counseling is an on-going process of self-discovery and transformation.  These clients choose to participate in therapy for a longer period.

What if I want couples counseling, but my partner won't come?

Unfortunately, sometimes one partner is not as willing as the other to come in for counseling. However, I usually find that it is possible to improve the relationship with one partner involved in therapy.

How much are your fees and do you take insurance?

Your fee depends on the kinds of services you request. I accept most insurances. You can learn more about the insurances accepted, fees, methods of payment, co-pays, deductibles, etc. by calling the office.  The clinic has clerical staff with many years of expertise in billing and insurance who can answer all your questions.

What do the initials after your name mean?

The letters "LMSW" stand for "Licensed Master Social Worker".  That means I am licensed by the State of Michigan as a Master Social Worker.  To have this credential requires a Master's degree or PhD from an accredited university.  In my case, I have a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan.  Licensure also requires completion of 2 years of supervised experience, passing a written examination and ongoing continuing education.  The "DCSW" stands for "Diplomate in Clinical Social Work".  It is the highest level of certification for clinical practice given by the National Association of Social Workers.  This designation requires 5 years of supervised practice, passing a written examination and the written evaluation and recommendation by three clinicians familiar with your work.  These credentials give you assurance that I have passed all of these requirements, keep up on continuing education and abide by the codes and standards of the state licensing board and the NASW.

What are the differences between a social worker, psychologist, counselor and psychiatrist?

There are differences in educational background and licensing requirements for each of these professional designations.  However, with the exception of a psychiatrist, who is a physician and mainly prescribes and monitors medication, the various disciplines all provide therapy or counseling services.  The education for social workers includes individual psychology and the various systems in which individuals function.  So, families, organizations, cultures and communities are considered to be essential elements in understanding the client and are studied as part of the social work curriculum.

After a number of years of direct practice, the original degree (psychology, social work or counseling.)  becomes less important.  Most therapists use similar techniques and ideas.  They also attend many of the same conferences, workshops and trainings as part of continuing education.

Do I need to take medications?

As a therapist, I am not licensed to prescribe medications. However, based on a joint assessment of problems you are facing, it may be advisable to consult with a psychiatrist to determine whether medication is warranted. Since I practice in a full-service behavioral health clinic, there are several psychiatrists with whom I practice who can prescribe and monitor medications.  I have worked with each of these highly-qualified, board-certified psychiatrists for many years.  We will coordinate your care to make sure you get the best possible outcome.
